Verified Gross Mass (VGM)
As of July 1, 2016, SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) requires Shippers to provide Ocean Carriers the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of all loaded containers prior to loading to vessel. This regulation was adopted by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) to increase safety and reduce the dangers to cargo, containers, and all those involved in container transport throughout the supply chain.
Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is the combined weight of all contents, plus the tare weight of the container.
